UEFA Confirm VAR Introduction For 2019/20 Champions League

The UEFA Executive Committee confirmed at the House of European Football in Nyon that Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be used in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League.

The UEFA announced the inclusion of the assistant referees Video ( VAR ) in several of its major competitions, one of them the Champions League.

The UEFA Executive Committee formalized on Thursday the inclusion of video arbitration ( VAR ) in the Champions League 2019-20, starting in August, when the previous qualifiers are played. It will also be operational in the 2019 European Supercup and UEFA has plans to use it in the final phase of Euro 2020, the Europa League 2020-21 and the final League of Nations 2021.

“We are confident that with the introduction of video arbitration in August 2019 we will have enough time to launch a solid system that will allow us to train the referees to ensure an efficient and successful implementation of the VAR in the Champions League, the world standard. of club competitions,” UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said.

The VAR came to stay in football:

Despite the fact that UEFA initially distrusted the implementation of the VAR in official competitions, it came to the conclusion that the technology was here to stay in football. Recall that the VAR was used in the World Cup Russia 2018 and incorporated in the main leagues of Europe as the Bundesliga , Ligue 1 , Serie A and Santander League.

UEFA has confirmed that video assistant referees (VAR) will be used in the Champions League from next season.

VAR will also be brought into the Europa League, though a year later from 2020-21, as well as the 2019 UEFA Super Cup, Euro 2020 and the UEFA Nations League finals in 2021.

European football’s governing body had resisted implementation of the VAR system, which allows key incidents to be reviewed with the use of video replays and was used at the World Cup in Russia this year.

“We are confident that introducing Video Assistant Referees in August 2019 will give us enough time to put in place a robust system and to train match officials to ensure an efficient and successful implementation of VAR in the UEFA Champions League, the world’s flagship club competition,” UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said in a statement.

Ceferin said last month that VAR would be introduced from the playoff round onwards, but will not be used in any European competition this season.

VAR is currently used in most of Europe’s top leagues, including La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and Portugal’s Primeira Liga.

The English Premier League, like UEFA, has resisted in favour of further testing but is expected to approve its use from next season.

This system is a very important bet in football technology because it provides technical assistance to referees on the pitch, using images from television cameras. It is only used in four cases that FIFA considers Decisive Play: determining when a goal has been scored, determining if there has been a penalty, determining if an action is worthy of a red card and correctly identifying a player when imposing a penalty.
